Why does it matter?

Communication is absolutely vital in a war. Not only that, but having this communication be secure is just as important. There is great secrecy in war tactics, and keeping that secrecy is a matter of life and death in many cases. Enigma allowed the German and Axis forces to communicate with ease. They were able to move entire batteries of soldiers with one swift, un-decodable message transmission. Many of their best victories came from swift sneak attacks on Allied forces. This would have only been possible with the help of Enigma. The Enigma code was though to be basically impervious to decoders. The actual cypher changes once every 24 hours, which meant that anyone trying to decode the Enigma had only 24 hours, and the code that was broken would be completely useless the next day. The Axis Powers utilized Enigma at every point during the war, even if just to send a friendly message. The more important messages included those that sent out bombers to destroy entire cities, and those that move the entire fronts of the battles to new locations. These messages contained serious tactics and basically the key to the German strategy.
